Adaptive systems for changing conditions

An adaptive system must recognise what matters and change its response usefully. Connecting sensing, control and physical behaviour is the core engineering question.

Identify meaningful variation

Loads, usage conditions and interactions with the environment may change during operation. Defining which changes require a response is the starting point, together with operating limits and safety conditions.

Integrate behaviour and control

Development connects the physical system, measurable quantities and control logic. Selecting an approach requires consideration of stability, repeatability, integration complexity and behaviour under abnormal conditions.

Evaluate against a reference

The value of adaptation is assessed by comparing defined solutions and operating conditions. Models and tests should establish where a variable response is useful and which trade-offs it introduces. Performance depends on the specific configuration and context.

What a project can define

  • Operating scenarios and constraints
  • Sensing and control requirements
  • Comparison plan against a reference solution

Before we begin

Does adaptive necessarily mean artificial intelligence?

No. Adaptation may rely on control logic and physical properties. More complex algorithms should be justified by the requirements.

Can integration into an existing system be assessed?

This is a possible development direction. Interfaces, dimensions, power, control constraints and operating conditions need to be understood before a proposal can be defined.
